Join us for a nature walk to learn about moss and lichen!
Dr. Amy Heim is visiting Narsaq from the University of Sherbrooke in Canada to study our moss, and you can too!
Come join Dr. Heim on a guided nature walk and learn about the moss and lichen around town.
During the walk you will learn:
● The difference between moss and lichen
● How to identify two different moss growth forms and three different lichen growth forms
● What plant species Canada and Greenland have in common
Participants can also help Dr. Heim collect moss to be stored in an herbarium in Copenhagen. An herbarium is a library for plants where researchers and the public can look at what different species look like and see how they have changed over time.
Anyone interested is welcome to collect one moss sample to be stored in the herbarium. These samples always include the collectors name, so future users can better understand where the plants came from.
Amy Heil is a postdoctoral researcher from the university of Sherbrooke in Canda. She analyzes the bacteria living on moss to see how different temperatures influence the ones that add nitrogen into our soil. Since nitrogen is needed for plant growth, the intention is to see how climate change could effect this natural process.
