Value creation, contestation, and power relations surrounding mining operations in South Greenland
Bjørk Tørnqvist is currently staying at NIRS to work on a phd project titled "Value creation, contestation, and power relations surrounding mining operations in South Greenland". Her PhD is jointly supervised by Lars Buur at Roskilde University and Javier Arnaut at Ilisimatusarfik.
Her research investigates how value creation, contestation, and power relations are embedded in the environmental governance of rare earth element (REE) mining. She hopes to uncover the complex ways in which different conceptualisations of value are drawn upon by various actors and stakeholders to advance specific ideas of green extractivism, which in turn serve particular (geo)political agendas. She is exploring these questions by researching the Kuannersuit and Killavaat Alannguat mining sites in South Greenland as case studies. While staying at NIRS Bjørk she is also volunteering at Narsaq Museum.
